Reading Fluency.....
What it is:
Reading fluency is a student's ability to read a passage of text accurately, with a consistent pace (not fast), with expression, and while being mindful of punctuation. Reading fluency is calculated by counting the number of words a student reads correct a minute. A student's reading fluency score is then calculated. The student's score is compared to a fluency standards table, to see if the student is as fluent as same grade level peers across the country. |

What the Research Says:
Reading Rockets states, "in order to understand what they read, children must be able to read fluently whether they are reading aloud or silently...children who do not read with fluency sound choppy and awkward. Those students may have difficulty with decoding skills or they may just need more practice with speed and smoothness in reading". So students who struggle with fluency need to build their word automaticity, sentence/phrasing automaticity, and need very explicit modeling of what fluent reading looks like and sounds like.
