Phonics......
What it is:
Phonics is simply the system of relationships between letters and sounds in a language. When a kindergartener learns that the letter B has the sound of /b/, and a second-grader learns that “tion” sounds like /shun/, they are learning phonics. Students understand phonics when they know the link between the sounds in a word, the letters in a word, and how a word in spelled. Also students knowing the correct pronunciation of a word is a phonics skill. What the Research Says:
Reading Rockets states, "decoding is the ability to apply your knowledge of letter-sound relationships, including knowledge of letter patterns, to correctly pronounce written words. Understanding these relationships gives children the ability to recognize familiar words quickly and to figure out words they haven't seen before. Although children may sometimes figure out some of these relationships on their own, other children struggle with this, and benefit from explicit instruction in this area." So students who struggle with phonics need very explicit and systematic instruction, to make the connection between phonetic patterns in spoken language, and letter-sound knowledge.
