Writing..............
What it is:
Writing is the act of drawing words and/or pictures on paper, OR a digital document to create text. From handwriting, to mechanics, to story structure, to thinking about an audience, the act of writing in itself has many components to it. Writing is a means of student expression. Writing can also provide a means to enhance students' vocabulary, comprehension, and spelling skills. As students develop their writing ability, they go thorough different stages of skill development that are defined here. What the Research Says:
Research states that, "some students with learning and literacy disabilities/difficulties will have problems with the process of writing, even if they have mastered the mechanics it entails. Some students lack adequate background knowledge to create a strong essay, whether it be narrative or expository writing. In addition, writing can be overwhelming to some students--they just don't know where to begin...organizing one's ideas is another problem faced by many young writers. Students often seem to pour out whatever is in their head, without sufficient attention to how to organize that information so others can understand it. Writing requires a transformation of ideas into an acceptable written form--and doing so requires reorganizing ideas into a sequence and text structure that is consistent with the goals of that particular writing activity" (Okolo, 2013). So struggling writers write less and have less motivation to write because of difficulties with organization, the process, and the lack of knowing where to begin.
